Benefits of Learning in a Diverse Environment in Toronto Essay

Toronto,Canada has been one of the most multicultural cities in the world and has attracted thousands of immigrants and foreign students each year mostly from Asian and European countries (Toronto, 2007) Due to the popularity of the city to foreigners as well as the prestigious schools it has such as the University of Toronto and the York University, students from different parts of the world have been attracted to study in the city. Universities have been offering a diverse learning environment, offering curriculum, facilities, and learning resources including professors and instructors that address the needs of and accommodate the growing number of foreign students and immigrants in Toronto. A diverse learning environment offers various benefits to students regardless of culture and nationality. First, it introduces me to different cultures and race, making students like me become aware of various cultures and beliefs. Having the awareness of different cultures of people in Toronto can improve my interpersonal and communication skills. â€Å"Hanging around people of different culture develop the students’ ability to understand the ideas and feelings of others, which in later life makes them, more likely to live in racially diverse communities, maintain friendships with people of different races and able to function more effectively in an increasingly diverse workplace† (Haas, 1999). From this view, a diverse learning environment therefore can eliminate or reduce racism and racist attitudes towards the minority groups. It also can also prepare me to adapt to a diverse environment in case I have to work or migrate to other country particularly in Asian and European countries especially now that the level of globalisation is increasing. A diverse learning environment can also improve my ability of working in a team since in universities, there are particular activities that needed group efforts and diverse ideas that can result to a more comprehensive outcome, providing me various ideas that could have never been available if not because of my foreign classmates and friends and even professors. On the other hand, there are still some people who are not open-minded and are not interested in learning about other cultures due to their very racist attitudes. A diverse learning environment with students or professors like these people can negatively affect some foreign students and students from minority groups, making them feel discriminated and unwelcome to such learning environment that may lessen their interest in studying or acquainting with students of different nationalities. However, in Toronto, it seems not much of a problem because foreigners and immigrants have long been welcomed in the city. House of the Scorpion and WALL-E

By: Jacob Bernhardt The book House of the Scorpion is very similar to the movie Wall-E. They both use propaganda to control the characters. In the book and the movie the people are under surveillance constantly so the people don't have freewill to do what they want. This is making the characters not act themselves. The book and the movie are both samples of dystopian literature. Wall-E is based in the future and The House of the Scorpion is not as modern. Wall-E was on earth when it was just covered in dust. In both the movie and the story people aren't allowed to be themselves. They are expected to be the same as everyone else. The robots and eejits are treated as the lowest characters. A couple examples of this are that eejits cannot go to school like the regular kids. The eejits aren't looked at as normal people and often are hated for this. The humans in Wall-E are not allowed to go where they wanted to go they had to stay in there hovering chair. They are all required to follow paths that are lit up all around the ship. The robots are used to take care of the humans and they must follow the same rules. If these rules are broken they are often punished and robots are taken to be rewired or fixed. The robots and eejits are always being watched and never have any privacy one bit. The eejits and robots are being ruled over. Matt is not allowed to do basic things like normal humans because he is an eejit. People hate him because of this and that causes him to not be allowed to do everyday things like other humans. Robots and humans in Wall-E are treated not much different. Humans are only allowed to follow paths for their chairs and not go off. If a robot acts up and doesn't do what they're supposed to they are taken to a room that had robots fixing the broken or bad ones to be repaired. The humans are under constant surveillance along with the robots. Robots and eejits are not allowed to be like the humans in both the story and movie. The people in both the story and the movie were expected to act a certain way and were punished if they were to express themselves differently. In the book Tam Lin was always the person he was expected to be until he decided to tell Matt why people were mean to him and why they treated him in a different way. This caused El Patron to get mad and Tam Lin was severely punished for his actions. This relates to the movie, The robots were never allowed to do anything differently like go off the glowing trails. This shows the dystopian characteristic of not being able to express yourself and to be different in anyway. Everyone must act the same and not express themselves or act out in any way. Both the book and movie heavily refer to dystopian characteristics. The book The House of The Scorpion and the movie WALL-E have a lot of references and relations to many dystopian characteristics. One of the main characteristics that show above the rest of them is the fact that they cannot be themselves. They are expected to be like everyone else. They would be in lots of trouble if they acted differently or broke the laws of where they are. Even in the book and movie dystopian characteristics were present. Both the movie and book were set in two completely different time periods.

Willis however, takes on a number of actions in order to outwit them all, show his true masculinity and kill the leader of the gang of criminals as well as the rest of them, while at the same time, winning his wife back. Although both are important aspects of the implementation, this paper will focus in defining the goal, purposes or role of computer technology in student achievement at the secondary school level. To understand this critical role, it is very important to know first the basics about some theories of learning and its current application to education technology. The theory of Cognitive Constructivism states that learning happens through the learners’ active efforts to assimilation new information imposed either by the instructor or by self-discovey (â€Å"Theories of Learning†, 2006). And this experience is very important if he or she is to make life-or-death decisions once he or she takes the road. Computer technology, when related to learning may be applied in a similar way, by providing a means to simulate reality to give the students a feel of what may or may not happen as a result of their decisions. Such is the function of simulations: to instill in learners goals which are similar to reality and resultant feelings that are similar to what may happen in real life because of the as a result of the decisions imposed by the program. A lot of simulation programs have now been developed for different purposes. Sim City provides the learner-gamer an experience of building a city and a feel of becoming a Mayor. The learner-gamer is subconsciously taught of the importance of planning and how each decision might give a positive effect (here, in the form of increase in the city’s revenue) or negative (in the form of rallies and decrease in the city’s revenue). Business simulations provide learners with vicarious experience of actually owning and handling investments without the need of using or losing real money. Design programs provide the learner-designer with an idea or view of the possible perspectives or outcome of each design in mind and an opportunity to manipulate or change it according to his or her desires even before actual realization of the design. There are also simulations in many different subjects like biology physics and chemistry, which can provide the learner with the opportunity to visualize the theories and manipulate situations and then see the results as would happen if the theories are applied. Simulations have been used for decades by the aviation and military industry and just until recently, the costs of simulations have prevented smaller institutions to avail its benefits (Boehle, n. d. ). Although, still not cheap, mass production, added to the said drastic improvement in learning retention rates (Boehle, n. d. ), simulations provide a very efficient tool for learning.
